The Indian Air Force (IAF) is the aerial branch of the Indian Armed Forces, tasked with safeguarding Indian airspace and conducting aerial warfare during armed conflicts. It was formally established on October 8, 1932, as an auxiliary air force of the British Empire, known as the Royal Indian Air Force in recognition of India’s aviation contributions during World War II. After India gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1947, the name Royal Indian Air Force persisted until the country became a republic in 1950, at which point the “Royal” prefix was dropped.
