The Calcutta High Court, founded in 1862 under Queen Victoria’s Letters Patent, holds a distinguished position as India’s oldest High Court. Initially named the High Court of Judicature at Fort William, its architectural design by Walter Long Bozzi Granville adds to its historical significance. Despite Kolkata officially replacing Calcutta’s name in 2001, the court’s institutional title remained unchanged. Efforts to rename it as the Kolkata High Court, in line with the updated city name, were initiated in 2016. While the Union Cabinet approved the proposal, it awaits parliamentary endorsement, thus the Calcutta High Court retains its historical name.
