The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) serves as the National Standards Body of India under the Department of Consumer Affairs, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Government of India. Established by the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016, which became effective on October 12, 2017, BIS operates with the Minister in charge of the Ministry or Department having administrative control as the ex-officio President of the organization. BIS boasts a workforce of over 500 scientific officers who serve as Certification Officers, Member secretaries of technical committees, and lab OICs.
Previously known as the Indian Standards Institution (ISI), the organization was formed under the Resolution of the Department of Industries and Supplies No. 1 Std. (4)/45, dated September 3, 1946. The ISI was registered under the Societies Registration Act, of 1860.
