The Union Cabinet approved Kaynes Semicon Pvt Ltd’s proposal to establish a semiconductor unit in Sanand, Gujarat.

The meeting was held on 2 September 2024 and chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

This is the fifth proposal under India’s Semiconductor Mission, launched in 2022.

Kaynes Semicon Pvt Ltd will invest around Rs 3,300 crore in the Sanand plant.

The plant will have a production capacity of 60 lakh chips per day.

Chips produced will be used in various applications including industrial, automotive, electric vehicles, consumer electronics, telecom, and mobile phones.

Micron’s proposal for a semiconductor unit in Sanand was approved in June 2023.

The India Semiconductor Mission, launched on 29 December 2022 by then Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, has a total outlay of Rs 76,000 crore.

The policy aims to encourage both domestic and foreign companies to set up chip manufacturing plants in India.

President Droupadi Murmu unveiled the Supreme Court’s flag and insignia on 1 September 2024 during the National Conference of the District Judiciary in New Delhi.

The Chief Justice of India, Justice DY Chandrachud, Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, Attorney General R Venkataramani, and other Supreme Court judges were present.

The conference was organized by the Supreme Court of India on 31 August and 1 September 2024.

The conference discussed issues related to District Judiciary including Infrastructure, Human Resources, Inclusive Courtrooms, Judicial Security, Judicial Wellness, Case Management, and Judicial Training.

The newly unveiled Supreme Court flag features the Ashoka Chakra, the Supreme Court building, and the Constitution of India.

The flag is blue, and the insignia has ‘Supreme Court of India’ and ‘Yato Dharmastato Jayah’ inscribed in Devanagari script.

The Sanskrit phrase “Yato Dharmastato Jayah,” meaning “Where there is Dharma, there is victory,” is taken from the Mahabharata.

The Indian GDP grew by 6.7% in the first quarter (April-June) of the financial year 2024-25.

This growth rate is down from 8.2% in the first quarter of 2023-24.

The growth was below the Reserve Bank of India’s forecast of 7.1%.

It is the lowest quarterly growth in the last fifteen months.

The lowest recent GDP growth was 6.2% during January-March 2023.

The Union Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation released the estimate on 30 August 2024.

Economists attribute the decline to reduced government spending due to election-related restrictions.

Despite the lower growth rate, India remains the fastest-growing economy in the world.

China, the second-largest economy, grew by 4.7% in the April-June quarter.

Bangladesh won its maiden SAFF Men’s U-20 Championship by defeating Nepal 4-1 in the final.

The final was played at the ANFA Complex in Lalitpur, Nepal.

In the semi-finals, Bangladesh defeated India 4-3 in a penalty shootout.

Nepal defeated Bhutan 4-1 in a penalty shootout in the other semi-final.

The 9th SAFF U-20 Men’s Championship was held in Nepal from 18 to 28 August 2024.

Six teams participated: India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, and Maldives.

India won the tournament in 2019, 2022, and 2023.

NorthEast United FC won its first Durand Cup title by defeating Mohun Bagan Super Giant (MBSG) 4-3 in a penalty shootout.

The final was played on 31 August 2024 at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan, Kolkata.

The 133rd edition of the Durand Cup was held from 27 July to 31 August 2024 in Kolkata, Kokrajhar, Jamshedpur, and Shillong.

Jamshedpur hosted Durand Cup matches for the first time.

Mohun Bagan Super Giant, with 17 titles, failed to defend its title.

NorthEast United FC, owned by John Abraham, also won the Shimla Trophy and the President’s Cup.

The Ministry of Panchayati Raj is organizing a five-day residential Management Development Programme (MDP) from 2nd to 6th September 2024.

The program is in collaboration with Indian Institute of Management Bodh Gaya (IIM BG).

It is designed for elected representatives and functionaries of Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs).

Participants include Presidents and Vice Presidents of District Panchayats, Pramukhs of Panchayat Samitis, Sarpanchs, and various Panchayat officials.

The training involves representatives from eight states: Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal.

The program aims to enhance leadership, management, and governance skills.

Topics covered include leadership, management, ethics, Rural Innovation, Own Source Revenue (OSR), and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The initiative is part of the Ministry’s effort to strengthen local governance and improve rural services.

The program is expected to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of local governance in India.

It was launched in January 2024 and has received positive feedback from participants and states.

The Ministry of Panchayati Raj is organizing a five-day Management Development Programme in partnership with Indian Institute of Management, Amritsar.

The program aims to enhance leadership, management, and governance in agriculture.

AgriStack is a farmer-centric DPI providing digital identities and integrating with state land records and other data.

The Krishi Decision Support System is a geospatial system for remote sensing-based information on crops, soil, weather, and water resources.

Detailed soil profile maps and inventory are being created under the Soil Profile Mapping initiative.

Pilots for Farmer IDs are targeted to create IDs for 11 crore farmers by FY 2026-27.

The Digital Crop Survey will be launched nationwide, covering 400 districts in FY 2024-25 and all districts in FY 2025-26.

Indian para sprinter Preeti Pal won two medals at the Paris Paralympics 2024.

She clinched the bronze medal in the 200m T-35 race, finishing in 30.01 seconds, her personal best.

Preeti Pal became the first Indian woman athlete to win two medals in track and field events at the Paralympics or Olympics.

She also won a bronze medal in the Women’s T35 100m race with a time of 14.21 seconds, another personal best.

Para-shooter Avani Lekhara secured India’s first gold medal at the Paris Paralympics 2024 in the women’s 10m air rifle event.

Avani Lekhara scored 249.7 points, which was her personal best performance.

Nitesh Kumar won his first gold medal at the Paralympics in the men’s singles SL3 badminton final.

He defeated Great Britain’s Daniel Bethell with scores of 21-14, 18-21, 23-21.

The match lasted an hour and 20 minutes.

SL3 class players, like Nitesh, compete with more severe lower limb disabilities and play on a half-width court.

Nitesh Kumar’s victory ensured India retained the SL3 gold medal, previously won by Pramod Bhagat three years ago in Tokyo.

Nitesh lost his leg in a train accident in Visakhapatnam in 2009.
