India and the United States will jointly set up the world’s first multi-material chip fabrication unit in India for national security purposes.

The agreement was signed during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the United States from September 21-23, 2024.

India will become one of the few countries in the world to produce such chips.

The agreement is part of the U.S.-India Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technology (iCET).

The U.S.-India iCET was launched in May 2022 to promote cooperation in strategic technology and defense industrial collaboration.

The chip fabrication unit, called Shakti, will be set up in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh, near the Jewar International Airport.

The West Bengal government plans to discontinue Kolkata’s tram service, except for a few heritage stretches like Maidan, Esplanade, and Khidirpur.

The announcement was made on 25 September 2024 by West Bengal transport minister Snehashis Chakraborty.

The closure will mark the end of 151 years of Kolkata’s tram service, the only operational tram network in India.

The tram system, introduced by the British in 1873, was initially horse-driven, later switching to steam engines and finally electric trams in 1902.

Trams were discontinued in other cities like Mumbai (1964), Chennai (1953), Nashik (1933), Kanpur (1933), Kochi (1963), Delhi (1963), Patna (1903), and Bhavnagar (1960s).

The name ‘Mankidia’ derives from the Odia term ‘Mankada,’ referring to their skill in catching monkeys.

Their livelihood sources include collecting wild honey and siali fiber from the Similipal forest.

Recent forest fires have posed a threat to their livelihoods.

According to the 2011 census, the Mankidia tribe has a population of 2,222 members.
