India extended a line of credit worth Rs 487.60 crores to the Government of Mauritius.

The loan was provided under the Indian Development and Economic Assistance Scheme (IDEAS) programme.

This is the first time India has extended a line of credit in Indian rupees to a foreign government under IDEAS.

The loan was offered by Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar to Mauritius Foreign Minister Maneesh Gobin.

The loan will finance the replacement of around 100 km of obsolete water pipelines in Mauritius.

The State Bank of India (SBI) will provide the Rs 487.60 crore loan.

IDEAS was initially launched as the India Development Initiative in the 2003-2004 budget by Finance Minister Jaswant Singh with an allocation of Rs 200 crore.

The program was later renamed as the Indian Development and Economic Assistance Scheme (IDEAS).

President Droupadi Murmu is on a three-nation tour to Algeria, Mauritania, and Malawi from 13-17 October 2024.

President Droupadi Murmu is the first Indian president to visit these African countries.

President Murmu arrived in Mauritania on 16 October 2024 after her visit to Algeria.

She was received at Nouakchott-Oumtounsy International Airport by the President of Mauritania, Mohamed Ould Ghazouani.

Bilateral talks were held between President Murmu and Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani at the Presidential Palace in Nouakchott.

Four MoUs signed between India and Mauritania focused on:

Foreign Office consultations

President Murmu addressed the Indian community in Mauritania at a reception hosted by the Indian Ambassador.

Analjaeet Singh Naruka won a bronze medal in the men’s trap event, marking the final medal for India.
