Last year, Neeraj Chopra became the first Indian athlete to be crowned Diamond League champion.

Mark Nicholls has been elected as the next President of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC).
His appointment was announced during the Annual General Meeting of the MCC.
Nicholls became a member of the MCC in 1981.

Israel is extending its maritime capabilities and presenting its BlueWhale Large Autonomous Underwater Vehicle for the first time.
This has successfully undergone thousands of autonomous operation hours, including intelligence-gathering for both maritime and coastal targets, acoustic intelligence, and identifying the presence of naval mines.
The autonomous submarine can perform a significant portion of the operations of a manned submarine, for periods of several weeks, at minimal cost and maintenance, without the need for operators on board.

World Hand Hygiene Day is observed on the 5th of May every year and it aims to promote the importance of hand hygiene in preventing the spread of infection and promoting good health.
Theme
The theme for this year for World Hand Hygiene Day is “Together, we can accelerate action to prevent infections and antimicrobial resistance in health care and build a culture of safety and quality in which hand hygiene improvement is given high priority.”

History
The history of World Hand Hygiene Day can be traced back to the year 2009 when the World Health Organization (WHO) launched the first Global Patient Safety Challenge, which called for a worldwide commitment to improving the safety of healthcare workers and patients.

Union defence minister Rajnath Singh will be in Chandigarh on Monday to inaugurate the country’s first Indian Air Force (IAF) Heritage Centre that has come up at the Government Press building in Sector 18.

UT administrator Banwarilal Purohit will be the guest of honour at the inauguration that is planned for 11.30 am. Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal VR Choudhari will be hosting the function along with the UT administration.
The heritage centre has eight attractions in total, including aircraft models and weapon displays. The biggest attraction, however, is its very own flight simulator.
In addition, informative exhibits, including aero engines, aircraft, kiosks and other air force artefacts, machines/fixtures, films on achievements and personalities, and guides have also been set up.

As part of the Adarsha Colony initiative, the Odisha government has sanctioned ₹22.5 crores for setting up India’s first resettlement colony for people affected by coastal erosion and climate change.
The colony will be set up for the people of Satbhaya in the Kendrapada district.
The fund will be utilities for the construction of houses, drinking water, electricity, roads and other facilities for the displaced people.

Minister of State for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Shantanu Thakur flagged off an inaugural shipment from Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port in Kolkata to operationalise the Sittwe Port in Myanmar.
Kolkata Port, officially known as Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Trust is the only riverine major port of India, located in the city of Kolkata, West Bengal, around 203 kilometres from the sea.
It is the oldest operating port in India and was constructed by the British East India Company in 1870.
The port has two distinct dock systems — Kolkata Docks at Kolkata and a deep water dock at Haldia Dock Complex, Haldia.
Syama Prasad Mukherjee: • Syama Prasad Mukherjee (1901 – 1953) was an Indian politician, barrister and academician.
• He served as the Minister for Industry and Supply in Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s cabinet.
• He quit the Union Government because of differences of opinion with the Nehru-led government and founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the predecessor to the Bharatiya Janata Party, in 1951.

The 10th Landport between India and Bangladesh was inaugurated at Dawki in Meghalaya by State Minister for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai the land port will boost trade and facilitate easier travel between the two countries.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has levied ₹ 4,000 crore Environment Compensation on Bihar for its failure to scientifically manage the liquid and solid waste in violation of the law. The tribunal has also directed the authorities to take remedial measures.
The Principle bench headed by the chairperson, Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel, said, “We levy compensation of ₹ 4,000 crores on the State on the polluter pays principle for its failure in scientifically managing the liquid and solid waste in violation of the mandate of law, particularly judgments of the Supreme Court and this Tribunal.”

Amara Raja Batteries Ltd on Saturday held a grand groundbreaking ceremony for Telangana’s first gigafactory in Mahbubnagar district to produce Lithium Cell and Battery Packs, with an ultimate capacity of up to 16 GWh and 5 GWh respectively.
A release from the battery maker said the event was graced by Telangana Minister for Industries KT Rama Rao, Founder, Amara Raja Group Ramachandra N Galla, Chairman and Managing Director, ARBL Jayadev Galla.
ARBL had earlier said it will be investing over Rs 9,500 crore, over 10 years for setting up research and development, and a greenfield manufacturing facility for lithium-ion battery-making in Telangana.
The ground-breaking ceremony officially marked the beginning of the ‘Amara Raja Giga Corridor’ that aims to produce Lithium Cell and Battery Packs with an ultimate capacity of up to 16GWh and up to 5 GWh respectively.

Border Roads Organisation (BRO) celebrated its 64th Raising Day on May 07, 2023, at all its detachments across the country.
The main function ‘Chief Engineers and Equipment Management Conference’ was organised at BRO School & Centre in Pune, which was graced by Raksha Rajya Mantri Shri Ajay Bhatt.
To mark the day, the Raksha Rajya Mantri inaugurated the BRO Technical Training Complex and an Automated Driving Track at the premises.
These facilities will enhance the training standards of the BRO personnel and help them to be better prepared for various challenges.

In her new book, My Life as a Comrade, co-written with Manju Sara Rajan, former CEO of the Kochi Biennale Foundation and journalist, Shailaja writes about the course of her life that started in a small settlement in Malabar and eventually led her to a Cabinet position in the State government.

The animal is endemic to the Nilgiri Hills and the southern portion of the Eastern and Western ghats in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. It is closely related to sheep. The name of the animal is derived from a Tamil word meaning blue hills.

The state animal of Tamil Nadu is Nilgiri Tahr. It is closely related to sheep and is genetically more similar to members of the genus Ovis than to other tahrs. Their backs are called “Saddlebacks”, as the adult males of Nilgiri Tahr develop a light grey area or saddle on their backs.

It is also known as Nilgiri Ibex and has been listed as endangered by the IUCN. The main threats to the animal are habitat loss, poaching and climate change.
