The-31-year-old won the rapid chess playoff on Sunday by 2.5 points to 1.5, capitalising on Nepomniachtchi’s mistakes in time trouble in the last of the shorter-format games, following the pair’s 7-7 tie in a psychological battle across 14 longer “classical” games.

World Press Freedom Day is observed annually on 3 May. Its main celebration is organized by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
The Day serves as a reminder to governments of the need to respect their commitment to press freedom and is also a day of reflection among media professionals about issues of press freedom and professional ethics.
World Press Freedom Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly (UNGA) in 1993, following the recommendation of UNESCO’s General Conference in 1991 (UNESCO 26 C/Resolution 4.3).

The theme for World Press Freedom Day 2023 is “Shaping a Future of Rights: Freedom of Expression as a Driver for all other human rights.”

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who is on an official visit to the Maldives, on Tuesday handed over a fast patrol vessel and landing craft assault to the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), describing the delivery of the two indigenous vessels as a symbol of the shared commitment of the two countries towards peace and security in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).

India has emerged as a leading defence exporter in recent years. A defence manufacturing ecosystem has been created which has the advantage of abundant technical manpower.

NTPC has signed a supplementary joint venture agreement with Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) to develop nuclear power projects.
The JV company shall develop two pressurized heavy-water reactors (PHWR) projects, Chutka Madhya Pradesh Atomic Power Project 2×700 MW and Mahi Banswara Rajasthan Atomic Power Project 4×700 MW.
Presently, NTPC has a total installed power generation capacity of 71.644 GW, of which 3.01 GW is renewable energy.

Indian Naval Ships Satpura and Delhi with RAdm Gurcharan Singh, the Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet embarked onboard arrived at Singapore on 01 May 2023 to participate in the Inaugural ASEAN India Maritime Exercise (AIME-2023) scheduled from 02 to 08 May 2023.
The Harbour Phase of the exercise is scheduled to be held at Changi Naval Base from 02 to 04 May 2023 and the Sea Phase will be conducted from 07 to 08 May 2023 in the South China Sea. AIME 2023 will provide an opportunity for Indian Navy and ASEAN navies to work together closely and conduct seamless operations in the maritime domain.

For the first time in the history of Ladakh the Australian High Commission in India has announced its Government Grant for a Project in Kargil.
This was announced during a Special Meeting at Srinagar chaired by the Australian high commissioner to India, Barry O’Farrell.
The project “Return to Roots” aims to integrate traditional knowledge with the current school science curriculum in alignment with the goals of the National Education Policy (NEP).

The White Oak Asset Management Company (AMC) has announced the launch of its new fund offer (NFO) ‘White Oak Capital Multi Asset Allocation Fund’ which is an open-ended scheme that will invest across multiple asset classes, including equity-related instruments, debt and gold instruments with old tax benefits.

Bank of India (BoI) announced the launch of a retail term deposit scheme for senior citizens named ‘Shubh Arambh Deposit’.
• With effect from April 1, 2023, the special FD scheme comes with an additional interest rate of 0.50% for senior citizens and 0.65% for super senior citizens.
• The bank is providing a 7.15% interest rate on a 501-day term for the general public.

The Odisha government decided to further extend its sponsorship for both the Men and Women’s Indian Hockey Teams (senior and junior) for another ten years from 2023 to 2033.
The decision in this regard was taken at the Cabinet meeting chaired by chief minister Naveen Patnaik. The cabinet on the day approved 15 different proposals submitted by various departments.
As Odisha has been the official sponsor of both the Men’s and Women’s National Hockey Teams since 2018, this support is going to be a significant step towards the growth and development of Hockey in India, chief secretary P.K. Jena said after the cabinet meeting.

Belgium’s Luca Brecel became the first player from continental Europe to win snooker’s World Championship as he withstood a fightback from four-time champion Mark Selby to triumph 18-15 in the final on Monday.
Brecel’s victory also meant he joined Canadian Cliff Thorburn (1980), the Republic of Ireland’s Ken Doherty (1997) and Australian Neil Robertson (2010) as only the fourth modern-era world champion from outside the United Kingdom at Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre.
