The origins of the International Day for Biological Diversity can be traced back to the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, commonly referred to as the Earth Summit, which took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1992.

World Turtle Day is observed on May 23 every year by American Tortoise Rescue, a nonprofit organization.
The day is celebrated to raise awareness among people to protect turtles and tortoises and their disappearing habitats around the world.
Tortoises and turtles play an important role in the ecological design of Earth.

This year’s theme for World Turtle Day is “Shellebrate”. The theme asks “everyone to Love and Save Turtles”.

World Turtle Day History

There wouldn’t have been any World Turtle Day if the American Tortoise Rescue (ATR) didn’t start it. This nonprofit organisation was established in 1990 and it started marking World Turtle Day in 2001.

Marking a significant milestone in the growing defence cooperation between India and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the INS TARKASH, the flagship frigate of the Indian Western Naval Fleet, along with the INS SUBHADRA, an offshore patrol vessel, arrived at Port Al-Jubail today.
The visit of these ships signifies the beginning of the harbour phase of the second edition of the naval exercise between the two nations, known as ‘AL-MOHED AL-HINDI 2023.’
This year, the naval exercise also includes the participation of a maritime patrol aircraft. The inaugural edition of the exercise was successfully conducted in 2021.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare (MoA&FW), Government of India is celebrating World Bee Day at Raja Bhoj Agriculture College, Warasivni, Balaghat, Madhya Pradesh.
The World Bee Day celebration would be graced by the Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Shri Narendra Singh Tomar in the august presence of the Agriculture Minister, Govt. of Madhya Pradesh and Chairman, OBC Welfare Commission, Govt. of Madhya Pradesh. As many as 1000 farmers/beekeepers/processors/entrepreneurs and all stakeholders associated with honey production are expected to attend the programme.
During the World Bee Day celebration, an Exhibition with over 100 stalls will be set up by Beekeepers, processors and different stakeholders of the beekeeping sector to showcase the diverse varieties of honey bees and different products in the beekeeping sector.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on Monday conferred with the highest honour of Fiji by its premier Sitiveni Rabuka in recognition of his global leadership, in a rare honour for a non-Fijian.
Modi arrived here in Papua New Guinea on Sunday on his maiden visit to the country to host a key summit between India and 14 Pacific island countries to boost bilateral ties.

Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Shri Amit Shah today laid the foundation stone of the permanent campus of the National Academy of Coastal Policing (NACP) at Dwarka, Gujarat, to be built at Rs. 470 crores. Veteran actor, Kamal Haasan will be honored with the Outstanding Achievement in Indian Cinema award at the 23rd IIFA(International Indian Film Academy Awards) Awards 2023, held in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
He was awarded various awards including Padma Shri (1990), Padma Bhushan (2014), and Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2016. While Ritesh Deshmukh and Genelia D’Souza will be honoured with Outstanding Achievement in Regional Cinema.

ISRO to launch a navigation satellite with a domestic atomic clock on May 29
For the first time, an indigenous atomic clock will be flown in the navigation satellite NVS-01.
According to the Indian space agency, the rocket GSLV-F12 carrying 2,232 kg NVS-01 navigation satellite is scheduled to lift off at 10.42 a.m. from the second launch pad in Sriharikota rocket port in Andhra Pradesh.

Uttar Pradesh has overtaken Maharashtra in sugar production in the current season, with 118 sugar mills operating in UP during the period as compared to 210 mills in the western state.
According to UP’s Sugarcane Development and Sugar Mills Minister Lakshmi Narayan Chowdhary, the total sugar produced by Uttar Pradesh in the sugar season 2022-2023 is 107.29 lakh tonnes, while the total sugar produced by Maharashtra is 105.30 lakh tonnes.
The area under sugarcane cultivation in Uttar Pradesh is 28.53 lakh hectares (the highest in India) as compared to 14.87 lakh hectares in Maharashtra.
The sugarcane-crushing season runs from October to June.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde approved the first Good Governance Regulations in the country.
The purpose of the rules is to enhance accountability, accessibility, dynamism and transparency in state administration. A separate cell will be set up to address the effects of climate change.
The rules also include expanding the scope of ‘Aaple Sarkar Seva Kendra’ for end-to-end online services to citizens within the prescribed time limit.
