Indian author Ruskin Bond wrote a book titled “The Golden Years: The Many Joys of Living a Good Long Life”.
The Golden Years book is published by HarperCollins India and released on 19 May 2023, Bond’s 89th birthday.
“The Golden Years” focuses on Bond’s experiences during the 60s, 70s and 80s. His first book, “The Room on the Roof”, was written when he was 17.
In 1992, Bond received the Sahitya Akademi Award for his work “Our Tree Still Grows in Dehra”.
He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1999 and the Padma Bhushan in 2014 for his contribution to literature and education.

Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra and Senior Advocate KV Viswanathan took oath as judges of the Supreme Court.
The oath of office was administered by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud. With the appointment of two new judges, the Supreme Court’s strength rose to 34 which is its sanctioned strength.
KV Viswanathan: He will serve in that capacity until May 25, 2031. He is a former Additional Solicitor General.
On the retirement of Justice JB Pardiwala on August 11, 2030. Viswanathan will be in line to assume Chief Justice of India’s office till his retirement on May 25, 2031.
Justice Mishra was the Chief Justice of the Andhra Pradesh High Court when he was recommended for elevation to the top court.

The Madhya Pradesh state cabinet has given its approval to a new scheme called ‘Mukhyamantri Sikho Kamao Yojana’ (Chief Minister Learn and Earn Scheme), aimed at providing opportunities for unemployed youth in the state.
Under the ‘Mukhyamantri Sikho Kamao Yojana,’ the government plans to offer training in around 700 different types of work across various sectors.
These sectors include engineering, hotel management, tourism, travel, hospital services, ITI, software development, banking, insurance, accounting, chartered accountancy, financial services, industries, and the MSME industry.

Bhopal becomes the first city in India to adopt the localisation of the United Nations-mandated sustainable development goals (SDG).
Bhopal will now have voluntary local reviews (VLR) to demonstrate the local government’s capacity and commitment towards achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Voluntary local reviews (VLR)
• The VLR is a subnational review of the progress and challenges in implementing the SDGs at the local level.
• It is a bottom-up and participatory approach that involves multiple stakeholders, such as civil society, the private sector, academia and citizens.

In Telangana, SAHAS, an initiative towards making workplaces safer for women has been launched yesterday. Home Minister Mohammed Ali formally launched the initiative.

SAHAS, which means Courage, is a programme that aims at strengthening the support ecosystem for women who face workplace sexual harassment.

Under the initiative, the SAHAS Microsite, SAHAS Sathi Chatbot, SAHAS Whatsapp Number, Forum and online support facilities were launched in Hyderabad. Speaking on the occasion, the Home Minister said, the SAHAS programme is another example of the same.

Recently, the Union Cabinet approved a fertilizer subsidy of Rs 1.08 lakh crore for the Kharif season 2023-24.
Out of this, Rs. 38,000 crore will be used to subsidize phosphatic and potassium (P&K) fertilizers, while Rs.70,000 crore would be used to subsidize urea.
With fertilizer prices being high due to global reasons like a drop in output and increased logistical costs, particularly due to the Ukraine scenario, the Centre anticipates this year’s fertilizer subsidy to exceed Rs.2.25 lakh crore.
In March 2018, a new system known as direct benefit transfer (DBT) was implemented, in which subsidy payments to companies would occur only after actual purchases to farmers by merchants.

The leaders of the Quad nations will meet on Saturday in Japan’s Hiroshima, according to the latest media reports.
The meeting will take place on the sidelines of the G7 summit. The Quad meeting was supposed to be held in Australia’s Sydney on May 24; however, the summit was cancelled following US President Joe Biden’s decision to abandon his Australia trip due to a debt ceiling crisis back home.

The Reserve Bank of India on Friday withdrew ₹2,000 currency notes from circulation. The central bank has asked banks to provide deposit and exchange facilities for ₹2,000 notes until September 30, 2023.

The ₹2,000 denomination banknote was introduced in November 2016 after the Modi government had introduced demonetisation of ₹500 and ₹1,000 notes. As per RBI, the objective of introducing ₹2,000 notes was met once banknotes in other denominations became available in adequate quantities.

The RBI had stopped the printing of ₹2,000 banknotes in 2018-2019. Also, about 89 per cent of the ₹2,000 denomination notes issued before March 2017 are said to be at the end of their estimated lifespan of 4-5 years.
