On 1 May Bombay Reorganization Act of 1960 bifurcated the Bombay State into two separate states namely, Gujarat and Maharashtra.
The state of Bombay had mainly four major languages i.e. Marathi, Kutchi, Gujarati, and Konkani.
While the Marathi and Konkani-speaking population became a part of the state of Maharashtra, the Kutchi and Gujarati-speaking population became a part of the state of Gujarat.

A retired Nasa satellite is set to crash into Earth tomorrow after nearly 21 years of orbiting the planet.
The US space agency said it expected some parts of the spacecraft to survive a fiery re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere tomorrow.
The Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (Rhessi) spacecraft blasted off into space in 2002 to help scientists learn more about how powerful bursts of energy from the Sun are created.
“The Department of Defence predicted the 660-pound spacecraft will re-enter the atmosphere at approximately 9:30 pm EDT on Wednesday, April 19 with an uncertainty of plus or minus 16 hours,” Nasa said in a statement.

It is observed on 2 May and is established by the United Nations (UN) to raise awareness about the importance of tuna fish.
The day was first time observed in 2017.

Table tennis player Kasumi Ishikawa, a winner of three Olympic women’s team medals and a five-time national singles champion, announced her retirement on Monday.
The 30-year-old left-hander was part of the team that won silver at the London Games in 2012, Japan’s first Olympic table tennis medal, before claiming bronze in the same event four years later in Rio de Janeiro and silver again in Tokyo in 2021.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment of Debadatta Chand and Rajneesh Karnatak as MD & CEO of Bank of Baroda (BoB) and Bank of India (BoI), respectively, for three years.
Sanjiv Chadha, MD & CEO, BoB, will retire on June 30, 2023. The three-year tenure of AK Das as MD & CEO of BoI ended in January 2023.

India and Russia have agreed to explore the possibility of accepting each other’s payment cards, RuPay (India) and Mir (Russia), for hassle-free payments between the two countries.
During the latest meeting of the Internal Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological, and Cultural Cooperation (IRIGC-TEC), which was jointly chaired by External Affairs Minister of India S Jaishankar and Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov, the decision was made.

Mutual acceptance of RuPay and Mir cards will facilitate transactions in Indian rupees and Russian rubles, making it easier for citizens of both countries to carry out cross-border payments. In addition, the meeting also explored the possibility of interaction between India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and Russia’s Faster Payments System (FPS).

The gross GST revenue collected in the month of April 2023 is ₹ 1, 87,035 crore of which CGST is ₹38,440 crore, SGST is ₹47,412 crore, IGST is ₹89,158 crore (including ₹34,972 crores collected on import of goods) and cess is ₹12,025 crore (including ₹901 crores collected on import of goods).

India will join the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) and Long-Term Aspirational Goals (LTAG) in 2027.
This announcement was made in the meeting of the Consultative Committee of the Parliament of the Ministry of Civil Aviation under the chairmanship of Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia.
ICAO has adopted several key ambitious targets, including a two per cent annual fuel efficiency improvement by 2050, carbon-neutral development, and net zero by 2050, all covered under CORSIA and LTAG.

India has said that to promote universal holistic health, it is important to recognize and respect cultural diversity and integrate traditional healing practices into modern healthcare systems.

Paraguay’s ruling candidate Santiago Pena scored a big win in the country’s presidential election on Sunday (local time), tightening the conservative Colorado Party’s political grip in the country and defusing fears about the end of diplomatic ties with Taiwan.
Forty-four-year-old Pena, who has pledged to maintain Paraguay’s long-standing Taiwan relations, had 42.7% of the vote with over 99% of ballots counted, a more than 15-point lead over centre-left rival Efrain Alegre, who has argued for switching allegiance to China.

Historian Ranajit Guha, on the cusp of turning 100 this May, passed away at his residence in Vienna Woods, Austria, Anandabazar Patrika reported. Guha ushered in a new way of studying South Asia, departing from the primacy of elitist concerns that had previously dominated scholarship.
He, alongside his collaborators (many of whom were his students), began the Subaltern School, which remains one of the most influential post-colonial, post-Marxist schools in history.

At the 100th episode of ‘Mann Ki Baat’, a book called ‘Collective Spirit, Concrete Action’ written by Shashi Shekhar Vempati, former CEO of Prasar Bharati (2017-2022) was launched.
The book was released during a day-long National Conclave on Mann Ki Baat @100, held in the national capital on April 26. According to the author, ‘Mann Ki Baat’ is a combination of the power of radio and the vision of a nation’s leader.
Over the course of 15 chapters, the book special also offers insights and perspectives from grassroots change-makers and iconic personalities.

• Women officers are being posted in major artillery units of all types, where they will get adequate training and experience in handling rocket, area and surveillance, and target acquisition (SATA) systems, as well as major equipment.

Dubai-based airline Emirates has unveiled its latest innovation, the world’s first robotic check-in assistant named Sara. The system is part of a new City Check-in and Travel Store that is set to launch in Dubai’s financial district.
Sara will match customers’ faces with scanned passports, check passengers in, and guide them to the luggage drop area.
