Uniyala multibracteata, a rare tree species not seen for 140 years, has been rediscovered in the Wagamon hills of the Western Ghats.
Known locally as Kattupoovamkurunnila, this tree blooms cotton hairs and flowers from October to January, thriving in evergreen forests and rocky grasslands at altitudes of 1,200 meters.
It belongs to the genus Uniyala, named after taxonomist B P Uniyal.
