Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra Tea got a European Union Geographical Indication Tag (GI tag) which will help promote the sale of the product in the European market.
This is an important certification that recognizes the tea as originating from a specific region. Once a product gets a GI tag, any person or company cannot sell a similar item under that name.
This tag is valid for a period of 10 years following which it can be renewed.
The other benefits of GI registration include legal protection for the item, prevention against unauthorised use by others, and promotion of exports.
Kangra tea is a type of tea that is grown in the Himachal Pradesh region of India. Since the middle of the 19th century, black tea and green tea have both been cultivated in the Kangra Valley. The production turned out to be successful in Palampur and Dharamshala.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC), on the second day of its three-day Executive Board meeting, finally confirmed on Wednesday that the 140th IOC session will be held in Mumbai in October 2023, noting with satisfaction that elections for the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) were completed in December 2022 and a new managing committee put in place.
The IOC Executive Board (EB), however, also noted that National Olympic Committee is yet to appoint a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) or Secretary General and urged the IOA to fill the post without further delay.

The Lucknow University (LU) will be hosting the 109th Indian Science Congress (ISC) for a sixth time next year.
Scientists from across the country will gather in the city to advance and promote the cause of science in the country,
LU Vice Chancellor Prof Alok Rai said” “It is a historic moment for us. At a time when we are striving to make it at an international level, hosting ISC will be a milestone.
LU has previously hosted the ISC in 1916, 1923, 1953, 1985 and 2002.

Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution and Textiles, Piyush Goyal tweeted that the ‘Nagri Dubraj’ variety of Nagari paddy of Dhamtari development block of Chhattisgarh has got a GI tag.
It is noteworthy that ‘Nagri Dubraj’ is the second crop of Chhattisgarh, which has got the Geographical Indication Registry Tag, i.e. GI Tag. Prior to this, the state has got GI tag for the Jeera Phool paddy variety.
It is known that in the meeting of the Geographical Indication Committee held in Gwalior on 29 November 2021, approval was given for giving GI tag to the ‘Nagri Dubraj’ variety of Dhamtari, Chhattisgarh.
It is known that in October 2021, Indira Gandhi Agricultural University, Raipur sent the proposal of Nagri Dubraj for a GI tag.

An Indian industrialist Naveen Jindal was honoured with a lifetime achievement award from the University of Texas at Dallas.
He was conferred in recognition of his accomplishments in industry, politics, and education.

Boxing Federation of India (BFI) chief Ajay Singh has been elected as the International Boxing Association (IBA) vice-president.
Singh’s appointment was confirmed during the IBA board of directors meeting Singh, who is in his second term as the BFI president, becomes IBA’s third vice-president and will stay in the role till 2026 alongside Volodymyr Prodyvus of Ukraine and Serbia’s Abdulmutalim Abakarov.

Girish Bapat considered the most powerful face of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Pune, died on Wednesday due to a prolonged illness. He was 73 years old.
Bapat breathed his last at Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital in Pune where he was being treated for breathing-related issues.

Bapat was elected to the Lok Sabha in the 2019 general elections. Prior to that, he was elected to the state Legislative Assembly five times consecutively, from 1995 to 2014, from the Kasba Peth seat. He was a state minister in the BJP-led government from 2009 to 2014 under then Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
A staunch Kary Karta of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Bapat was in jail for 19 months during the Emergency. He also worked as a labourer in a Telco company where he was an active Union member.
Bapat entered politics in the 1980s and was elected to Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) as a corporator in his first attempt in 1983. He was elected a corporator three times in a row before being elected as an MLA from the Kasba Assembly constituency.

Kenzaburo Oe, a Nobel Prize-winning author whose emotionally searing novels and essays bridged the personal and political, grappling with the legacy of World War II in Japan and with his own experience raising a son with disabilities, died on March 3. He was 88.
His publisher, Kodansha, announced the death but did not say where or how he died.
Mr Oe (pronounced OH-eh) lost his father and grandmother during World War II, came of age during the U.S. occupation of Japan and rose to become one of his country’s most acclaimed authors, writing novels that channelled Japan’s postwar malaise.

India’s largest two-wheeler maker Hero MotoCorp Ltd on Thursday announced that its board has appointed Niranjan Gupta as the new chief executive officer (CEO) of the company, effective from 1 May 2023.
Niranjan Gupta is currently the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Head of Strategy and M&A, said Hero MotoCorp in its filing.

Dr Pawan Munjal will continue as Executive Chairman and Whole-time Director on the board, the two-wheeler maker said. Hero MotoCorp said that it will announce a new CFO in due course of time.

The government has identified 1275 railway stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme for the development of railway stations in India.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav gave this information in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha on March 29.
Amrit Bharat Station Scheme Amrit Bharat Station Scheme was introduced by the Ministry of Railways in December 2022.
The objective of the scheme is to prepare a master plan for railway stations and implement the master plan in a phased manner to enhance facilities.

Ministry of Defence, on Thursday, March 30, signed a contract with Bharat Electronics Limited, Bangalore for the procurement of 13 LYNX-U2 fire control systems for the Indian Navy.
The total cost of the procurement will be 1700 crores under Buy ( Indian- IDMM (Indigenously Designed Developed and Manufactured) category.
LYNX-U2 System is a naval gun fire control system designed and developed indigenously and is capable of accurately tracking and engaging targets amidst sea clutter as well as air and surface targets.
The indigenously developed 4th generation systems will be installed on New generation off shore patrol vessels.

These will be built indigenously at Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers and Goa Shipyard limited.

The Arunachal Pradesh government has decided to hand over five terminated hydropower projects with a generation capacity of 2823 MW to two Central Public Sector Undertakings (CPSUs).

The Arunachal Pradesh government has decided to hand over five terminated hydropower projects with a generation capacity of 2823 MW to two Central Public Sector Undertakings (CPSUs), as the the Cabinet on Wednesday approved the memorandum of agreement (MoA) to be signed with the CPSUs.
The MoA would be signed soon with the two CPSUs.
Officials said that the state Cabinet at its meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pema Khandu approved the MoA to be signed with the CPSUs for the development of hydropower in the state.
“This would pave the way to unlocking potential five hydropower projects with an installed capacity of 2820 MW. This will spur huge investment in the state and generate employment,” a state government official told the media.

The Indian Railways has sanctioned Rs 303 crore for the development of Cuttack station, said Union Minister of Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw here today.
“Cuttack railway station will have world-class facilities. The Centre has allocated around Rs 10,000 crore for the railways sector in Odisha for 2023-24 fiscal.
