The actor is delighted with his participation and is excited to cheer for India’s team players in the upcoming World Summer Games in Berlin.

French rail company Alstom will manufacture 100 aluminium-bodied Vande Bharat trains with sleeper facilities, after bidding the lowest for the tender at a price of ₹150.9 crores per train.

Two companies — Alstom and Hyderabad-based Medha Servo Drives — had participated in the tender. Medha bid at a price of ₹169 crore per train.
Aluminium-bodied trains will be lighter in weight as compared to a stainless steel body.
The train is pegged to have a speed capability of 200 km per hour.

South Korea successfully launched a commercial-grade satellite for the first time Thursday as part of its growing space development program, as rival North Korea is pushing to place its first military spy satellite into orbit.

The two Koreas, technically in a state of war, have no military reconnaissance satellites of their own and both are eager to possess them.

The South Korean launch on Thursday will likely assist its efforts to develop a space-based surveillance system.

The Asia-Pacific region has witnessed an escalation in tensions, leading to increased military exercises and diplomatic manoeuvres by various countries. A notable event on the horizon is the Multilateral Naval Exercise Komodo (MNEK) hosted by Indonesia.
The Multilateral Naval Exercise Komodo is scheduled to take place from June 4 to 8, 2023, in Makassar, Indonesia.
This event will mark the fourth of the exercise since its inception in 2014. Indonesia has extended invitations to a total of 47 nations, highlighting the desire for widespread international engagement and cooperation.
The exercise provides an opportunity for participating countries to enhance their interoperability and build stronger diplomatic ties.
Joint Drill: Exercise Amana Youyi-2023 China has also planned a joint drill called Exercise Amana Youyi-2023 with countries from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), including Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam. Such collaborations further emphasize the complex dynamics at play in the region.

P. Upadhyay has taken over as Director General of Naval Armament (DGONA) at IHQ MoD (Navy) from the KSC layer, who superannuated on May 31, 2023.
Upadhyay belongs to the 1987 batch of the Indian Naval Armament Service.
He joined the Naval Armament Organization of the Indian Navy on July 12, 1989.

Trinidad and Tobago’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Dennis Francis, was elected the president of the upcoming 78th session of the UN General Assembly on Thursday.
Francis was elected by acclamation at a General Assembly plenary session, as his candidacy was not contended.
He will take up the new post in September 2023, to succeed current General Assembly President Csaba Korosi, a Hungarian diplomat.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has won the bid to host the 2025 World Conservation Congress (WCC) of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
The WCC is the world’s largest and most important gathering of conservationists, and it is expected to draw more than 10,000 delegates from over 160 countries.
The UAE has a long history of environmental protection, and it is home to a number of important conservation initiatives, including the Sheikh Zayed Desert Learning Center and the Al Ain Oasis.
The 2025 WCC will be held in Abu Dhabi from October 10-21, 2025.
The event will be an opportunity for conservationists from around the world to come together and discuss the most pressing environmental challenges facing our planet.

In Thailand Open Badminton, World no. 2 South Korean An Se Young defeated China’s He Bingjiao in straight games 21-10, 21-19 to claim her fourth Women Single’s Super Series title on the BWF World Tour this season at the Thailand Open in Bangkok today.
This was Young’s seventh final berth in a row.

In Men’s singles, the Thai shuttler Kunlavut Vitidsarn secured the Thailand Open title for the first time in his career today, becoming the only men’s singles player in the badminton World Tour to have won more than one tournament this year.

He defeated Lee Cheuk Yiu of Hong Kong in straight sets, 21-12, 21-10 in the final.

The third edition of the Khelo India University Games, organised in four cities of Uttar Pradesh, concluded in Varanasi on Saturday, with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath saying such events are taking sports to new heights.

The closing ceremony was held in a simple manner in view of the triple train accident in Balasore in Odisha, and a two-minute silence was observed, according to an official statement.
The accident has claimed 288 lives and injured more than 1,100.

Reserve Bank of India has imposed a penalty of ₹2.2 crore on the Indian Overseas Bank for violation of various regulatory norms, the central bank said in a release.
The breach pertains to guidelines on disclosure of NPA (non-performing assets) divergence, interest rates on deposits, and advisory on ‘Man in the Middle (MiTM) attacks in ATMs.
RBI had conducted the Statutory Inspection for Supervisory Evaluation as per Indian Overseas Bank’s financial position as on March 2021, wherein it found contravention of certain provisions.
The public sector bank failed to make a minimum mandatory transfer of a sum equivalent to 25 per cent of its disclosed profit for FY21 to its reserve fund. Further, there was a significant divergence between the NPAs, as reported by it and as assessed by the inspection, and the bank offered interest on deposits of non-individuals.

National Centre for dam safety to be set up at MNIT Jaipur
The Ministry of Jal Shakti on Monday signed an MoU with an institute here to set up a national centre to ensure the protection of dams from earthquakes and other natural disasters.
Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said the central government would provide Rs 30 crore for setting up the proposed centre at the Malviya National Institute of Technology MNIT.

The International Conference on Spacecraft Mission Operations (SMOPS-2023), organised by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) in collaboration with the Italian Space Agency (ASI) and the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA) and in association with industry partners will be held on June 8 and 9.

The conference aims to bring together Space agencies, start-ups, industry, and academia to discuss emerging technologies and automation in Space mission operations and ground segments.

World Environment Day, hosted under the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP), marks a day to raise awareness and action about the environmental catastrophes of the modern world. A major initiative of this day is to encourage people to live sustainable lifestyles.
Held on June 5 each year, World Environment Day has a specific host country and a theme. For 2023, the host is the West African country of Côte d’Ivoire, in partnership with the Netherlands; while the theme is preventing plastic pollution.
Under the hashtag #BeatPlasticPollution, the 45th World Environment Day with the same theme was also held under the leadership of India. This theme is an initiative to raise awareness about the production, use, disposal, and effects of plastic.
