On Tuesday, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) presented the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus, with the Olympic Order for his inspirational role in ensuring the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 took place despite the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Olympic Order was presented to Dr Tedros for his support of the IOC and WHO cooperation agreement signed in 2020 by International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach at the Olympic House.
The Olympic Order, established in 1975, is the highest award of the Olympic Movement. It is awarded for particularly distinguished contributions to the Olympic Movement, i.e. recognition of efforts worthy of merit in the cause of sport. Traditionally, the IOC bestows the Olympic Order upon the chief national organizer (s) at the closing ceremony of each respective Olympic Games.

Ghana’s record goalscorer Asamoah Gyan has announced his retirement from football. The 37-year-old fought back tears as he revealed his decision while on stage with former Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba in the Ghanaian capital, Accra.

The 2010 BBC African Footballer of the Year made his international debut in 2003 as a 17-year-old, coming on as a substitute in a World Cup qualifier against Somalia. He made his final appearance for the Black Stars in 2019.

He played in seven Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, helping Ghana finish third in 2008 and as runners-up in the 2010 and 2015 editions.

Pakistan established a Cabinet Committee on Inter-Governmental Commercial Transactions to negotiate the commercial agreement of handing over its Karachi Port Terminals (KPT) to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), as the country struggles with record inflation, fiscal imbalances and low reserves, Afghanistan-based Khaama Press reported.

It is the first inter-governmental transaction permitted by a law passed last year to raise emergency funds.
Finance Minister Ishaq Dar chaired the meeting on Monday and decided that a committee would be required to negotiate a commercial agreement between the Karachi Port Trust (KPT) and the government of the United Arab Emirates.

According to a Gender Gap Index 2023, released by World Economic Forum, India has been ranked 127 out of 146 countries in the Global Gender Gap Report 2023, up by 8 positions from 135 in 2022.

Former Union Finance Secretary Hasmukh Adhia has been appointed as chairman of GIFT (Gujarat International Finance Tec) City.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has launched Asia’s largest, ambitious and historic cluster development scheme in Thane. While launching the scheme, Mr Shinde said his much-awaited dream is coming into reality but he will be the happiest person in the world only on the day the beneficiaries of the scheme will receive the keys of their own house.

This scheme was conceptualized for the collective redevelopment of unauthorized and official dangerous buildings after the collapse of the Sairaj Building in Thane which had claimed 18 lives. The redeveloped township plan includes well-equipped health, educational, sports, recreational, parking, mandi, and civic facilities. The CIDCO will execute the project. Under the project, the integrated redevelopment project will be done on the lines of townships.

Sylvester daCunha, the man behind the iconic Amul Girl ‘utterly butterfly campaign, passed away.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi remains the world’s most popular leader with an approval rating of 75 per cent. This was revealed in a Global Leader Approval Ratings released by a US-based consulting firm Morning Consult. Swiss President Alain Berset stands at second position followed by Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

In the approval rating, US President Joe Biden is placed at the 8th position while UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is at the 13 position among 22 world leaders.
The latest approval ratings are based on data collected from the 7th to the 13th of this month. It is based on a seven-day moving average of adult residents in each country, with sample sizes varying by country.

Petteri Orpo, the leader of the conservative party in Finland, has been elected as the country’s prime minister by the parliament. Orpo will lead a coalition government comprising four parties, including the far-right Finns Party, which intends to implement strict measures on immigration. With 107 members in favour, 81 opposed, and 11 absent, the parliament expressed its support for Orpo, who emerged victorious in the April elections. His victory initiated negotiations for a coalition government, which have been ongoing since then.

The city of Gujarat, Surat has set a Guinness World Record with over 1.53 lakh people participating in a yoga event at one place on the International Day of Yoga (IDY), organized on 21st June.
Guinness officials handed over the certificate to chief minister Bhupendra Patel at the venue. Two 4km-long stretches of roads, each around 300 meters wide, connecting the Y junction were covered with carpet for participants.
The participants were divided into groups of 1,000 each As the country is celebrating 75 years of independence, the state government has selected 75 “iconic places” in the state to celebrate Yoga Day.
These places include the Sabarmati Riverfront (Ahmedabad), Statue of Unity (Kevadia), White Rann of Kutch and Modhera Sun Temple.

The Tamil Nadu police have introduced a new scheme called ‘Pengal Pathukaaptu Thittam’ (Women Safety Scheme) in Chennai city. The scheme aims to provide safe transportation for women who return from work between 10 pm and 7 am. It is operational every day of the week. Women who feel unsafe while travelling alone at night can dial helpline numbers such as 1091, 112, 044-23452365, and 044-28447701.
Upon receiving a call, the police will dispatch a patrol vehicle to accompany the women and ensure their safe transportation to their residences.

British financial services major Lloyds Banking Group (LBG) is setting up a technology centre in Hyderabad as part of a larger 3 billion pound strategic investment aimed at transforming its digital offering.
Forming a part of the investment, to be made over the next three years, the Lloyds Technology Centre in Hyderabad will hire 600 highly skilled technology, data and cyber specialists by the end of 2023.
The centre, which will open later this year, reflects the commitment to enhance digital capabilities and innovation, for customers, by leveraging specialist skills and capabilities of people, technology and data in Hyderabad, Lloyds Banking Group said on June 21.
