Rakesh Pal has been appointed as the 25th Director General of the Indian Coast Guard on Wednesday (July 19). The officer, who hails from Uttar Pradesh, is an alumnus of the Indian Naval Academy and joined Indian Coast Guard (ICG) in January 1989.
According to an official statement, the director general has undergone professional specialisation in the Gunnery and Weapons System at the Indian Naval School Dronacharya in Kochi and Electro-Optics Fire Control Solution course from the United Kingdom.
The Indian Coast Guard is a maritime law enforcement and search and rescue agency of India with jurisdiction over its territorial waters including its contiguous zone and exclusive economic zone.
It was formally established on 1 February 1977 by the Coast Guard Act, 1978 of the Parliament of India.

Gujarat will host the 69th edition of Filmfare Awards in 2024, and the state government’s tourism corporation has signed an MoU with entertainment and lifestyle content company Worldwide Media (WWM) to host the event and promote the state as a film destination, officials said.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Tourism Corporation of Gujarat Ltd (TCGL) and WWM was signed in Gandhinagar on Wednesday in the presence of state Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Times Group Managing Director Vineet Jain.

DD Sports secures broadcasting right for the 9th edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, bringing joy and excitement to fans.
The tournament, starting on July 20, 2023, will mark the inaugural occasion when the World Cup is co-hosted by two countries, namely Australia and New Zealand. DD Sports was launched on 18 March 1998.
The tournament, held every four years and one year after the men’s World Cup, was first played in 1991 in China, and has since been expanded to 32 teams following the 2023 edition.
Hannah Wilkinson scored to open the second half and New Zealand went on to upset Norway 1-0 in the first match for its first-ever win at the Women’s World Cup, hours after a shooting in downtown Auckland shocked the host nation.

Himachal Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu released a book titled ‘Raag Prakash’ here today. Written by Dr Om Prakash Kaul, the book is a collection of a particular set of ‘Ragas’.

At the launch, the Chief Minister said that the book will prove beneficial for students, researchers and music lovers.

Mumbai has been ranked as the best Indian city for students in the QS Best Student Cities 2024 ranking.
However, its global ranking dropped to 118, indicating a decline from the previous year’s position.
The QS Best Student Cities ranking compares 160 premier educational destinations, including 26 new entries.
Cities must have a minimum population of 250,000 and at least two universities in the QS World University rankings to be considered for the QS city ranks.
The ranking takes into account 100,000 survey responses from students.

Andhra Pradesh Government has recently released millions of Gambusia fish in water bodies to control malaria, dengue and other mosquito-borne diseases.
In the last 6 months, Andhra Pradesh witnessed 2,339 cases of dengue and 1,630 cases of malaria.
In order these rising cases of malaria and dengue, Andhra Pradesh Government released about 10 million Gambusia Fish in water bodies in the state.

The International Aerospace and Defense Exhibition (ADEX) 2023 will be organized in Seoul, the capital of South Korea. 550 companies from 35 countries will participate in this defence exhibition.

Young Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa emerged champion in the V Geza Hetenyi Memorial Super GM chess tournament 2023.
The 17-year-old GM scored 6.5 points to finish clear first in the 10-player event. After nine rounds of play, he ended up a point ahead of M Amin Tabatabaei (Iran) and Russia’s Sanan Sjugirov.
Praggnanandhaa posted five wins, drew three games and suffered only one defeat in the tournament, at the hands of Amin Tabatabaei in the fifth round.

Japan has become the second Quad partner after the United States to sign an agreement with India for the joint development of the semiconductor ecosystem and maintain the resilience of its global supply chain.

The agreement was signed between Union Minister for Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw and Japan’s Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Yasutoshi Nishimura in the national capital.

With around 100 semiconductor manufacturing plants, Japan is among the top five countries to have a semiconductor ecosystem.

The Centre on Wednesday notified the elevation of four judges as chief justices of Telangana, Orissa, Gujarat and Kerala high courts.

The appointments include a woman chief justice for Gujarat high court, the sole high court in the country with a woman at the helm.
Clearing the recommendations received in this regard from the Supreme Court collegium on July 5, the President of India Droupadi Murmu, notified the appointment of Justice Alok Aradhe as Telangana high court chief justice, Justice Subhasis Talapatra as Orissa high court chief justice (upon the retirement of present CJ on August 7), justice Sunita Agarwal as Gujarat high court chief justice and justice Ashish Jitendra Desai as Kerala high court chief justice.

Minister of State for Communication Shri Devusinh Chauhan and Director General, Universal Postal Union (DG UPU) Mr Masahiko Metoki inaugurated the Regional Office of UPU in New Delhi.
The Regional Office will undertake UPU’s technical assistance activities in South Asia region by entering into a host country agreement with the Department of Posts, India.
The Regional Office of UPU in India will serve as a vital platform for exchanging ideas, experiences and expertise, thereby accelerating the modernisation and transformation of the postal sector.
India also announced a contribution of USD 2,00,000 over four years towards the UPU’s Development and Technical Assistance activities through the Asia Pacific Postal Union.
