• On 6th August 1945, a US bomber dropped the uranium fission bomb, codenamed Little Boy, on Hiroshima, a city in Japan.
• Three days later it dropped another bomb codenamed Fat Man, on Nagasaki.
• The explosion and resultant firestorms are believed to have killed around 80,000 people in Hiroshima and around 40,000 people in Nagasaki.
• Thousands more died in the following years due to the exposure to radiation from the blast and also from the black rain that fell in the aftermath of the explosions.
• Long-term effects of the attack included birth defects, malnutrition, cancer and other illnesses
• This bombing marked the end of World War II, with Japan surrendering to the Allies on 14th August 1945.

HDFC Bank’s Sashidhar Jagdishan has emerged as the highest-paid bank chief executive in FY23, grossing over Rs 10.55 crore in overall pay.

Jagdishan’s colleague Kaizad Bharucha, the deputy managing director of the largest private sector lender, drew Rs 10 crore for the fiscal year and may be the second-highest grossing banker in the country, according to disclosures made in annual reports.

Among the bank CEOs, Axis Bank’s Amitabh Chaudhry’s Rs 9.75 crore payout was the second biggest and he was closely followed by Sandeep Bakhshi of bigger rival ICICI Bank, who drew Rs 9.60 crore for the fiscal year. Uday Kotak, who holds over 26 percent of Kotak Mahindra Bank.

India batsman Manoj Tiwary has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. He belongs to West Bengal.
Tiwary last played for India in 2015, when the Indian team toured Zimbabwe, scoring 34 runs in three ODIs.

The primary objective behind the development of the Monitoring App for Seamless Inspection (MASI) is to ensure the effective and efficient functioning of the inspection mechanism for CCIs as provided under the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015.
The app aims to synchronize the monitoring of the system by various authorities, including Child Welfare Committees (CWCs), State Inspection Committees, District Inspection Committees, Members of Juvenile Justice Boards (JJBs), and State Commissions for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCRs).

MASI serves as a single platform for inspections of all CCIs across the country, enabling any of the above-stated authorities to conduct unified inspections.
The application is linked to a monitoring portal, where automatic reports are generated, ensuring real-time updates on the status of CCIs.

In a historic move, the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the redevelopment of 508 Railway Stations across the country via video conferencing today.
Redeveloped at a cost of more than Rs 24,470 crores, these 508 stations are spread across 27 states and union territories, including 55 each in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, 49 in Bihar, 44 in Maharashtra, 37 in West Bengal, 34 in Madhya Pradesh, 32 in Assam, 25 in Odisha, 22 in Punjab, 21 each in Gujarat and Telangana, 20 in Jharkhand, 18 each in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, 15 in Haryana, 13 in Karnataka among others.

Navi Mumbai is set to become the first city in the country to be septic tank-free and have toilets in 100% of households soon.
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) is taking measures in this regard by building household toilets in slums and laying drainage pipe networks, bringing down the number of septic tanks to 42 currently.
The NMMC has laid a network of sewage drains all over the city with 7 state-of-the-art sewage treatment plants being set up with the help of Central government funds.

Aiming to prevent plagiarism and malpractices in competitive examinations, the Jharkhand Assembly on Thursday passed a new bill to check unfair means, including question paper leaks. The bill which proposes severe punishment measures was passed amid opposition from BJP MLAs, who tore copies of the bill, calling it a ‘draconian’ law.
The Jharkhand Competitive Examination (Prevention and Redressal of Unfair Means in Recruitment) Bill, 2023, proposes strict provisions which are non-bailable and non-compoundable.

The Central government has deferred its decision to restrict the import of certain categories of laptops and computers until November 1, allowing companies three-months time to import these devices.

“Import consignments can be cleared till October 31, 2023, without a licence for restricted imports,” the notification said, adding that liberal transitional arrangements will be notified for the import of laptops, tablets, all-in-one personal computers, and servers till October 31.
This is a partial reversal from its August 3 order, which had imposed import restrictions on these devices with immediate effect.

Continuous steps are being taken by the Modi government at the Center to make the farmers financially empowered. This scheme has been started by the government for better data collection of the sowing of the Kharif season.
Based on a pilot project, the scheme has been started in 12 states. Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar told in a written reply in the Lok Sabha that the government
has launched Digital Crop Survey (DCS) as a pilot in 12 states from Kharif-2023.

Indian-American Shohini Sinha has been appointed by FBI Director Christopher Wray as the new special agent in charge of the Salt Lake City field office.
