Every year, World Mosquito Day is celebrated on August 20.
This is done to commemorate the contributions of British doctor Sir Ronald Ross who was the first person to discover the connection between malaria and female anopheline mosquitoes.

On August 20, 1897, a British doctor made a groundbreaking discovery.
Sir Ronald Ross found that female Anopheles mosquitoes transmit malaria between humans.
The parasite was located in the mosquito’s stomach.

The Akshay Urja Day campaign was organised for the first time by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh with the Ministry for New & Renewable Energy Sources (MNRE) in Delhi on 20th August 2004, also known as Renewable Energy Day.
This day makes people aware of using natural resources like wind, solar, and hydropower.

The Maharashtra Cabinet announced the implementation of the Bhagwan Birsa Munda Road Scheme which aims to enhance road connectivity in tribal areas of the 17 districts of the state.
The scheme aims to connect remote tribal areas to the main roads.
The project is estimated to cost Rs 5,000 crore and nearly 6,838 km of roads will be constructed as part of the scheme.

Spain secured their first-ever Women’s World Cup title with a 1-0 win over England at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup final in Sydney (Australia).
The win marks a historic FIFA Women’s World Cup campaign for Spain who previously failed to make it past the Round of 16. Making it to the final after knockout wins over Switzerland, the Netherlands and Sweden, was already a first for Spain with the victory in the final cause for an even bigger celebration.

NTPC Ltd, India’s largest power producer and a central PSU under the Ministry of Power, has started a trial run of a hydrogen bus in Leh.
Towards achieving carbon-neutral Ladakh, NTPC is setting up a hydrogen fuelling station, solar plant and providing five fuel cell buses for operation on intracity routes of Leh.

The National Mission on Financial Inclusion popularly known as Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) was launched on 28th August 2014 and it has completed almost 9 years.
As per the latest reports submitted by banks, the total number of Jan Dhan accounts has crossed 50 crore as on 9th August 2023.
Out of these accounts, 56% accounts belong to women and 67% of accounts have been opened in Rural / Semi-urban areas.
The deposits in these accounts are above Rs. 2.03 lakh crore and about 34 crore RuPay cards have been issued in these accounts free of cost.
The average balance in PMJDY accounts is Rs. 4,076 and more than 5.5 crore PMJDY accounts are receiving DBT benefits.
PMJDY scheme has been successful in changing the financial landscape of the country and has brought near saturation in bank accounts for adults.

The Anduri Utsav, popularly known as Butter Festival, celebrated at Dayara Bugyal of Uttrakhand district culminated with much fanfare as villagers played ‘Holi’ by applying milk and butter instead of Gulal on each other.

Bugyal means a meadow or pasture in the local Uttarakhandi dialect. Dayara Bugyal, situated at an altitude of 11,000 feet above sea level, is one of the pristine meadows in the state. Earlier this festival was celebrated by throwing cow dung on each other.
Now, in place of cow dung, milk, butter, and buttermilk are used.

Bharat Petroleum, the second-largest Indian Oil Marketing Company and one of the premier integrated energy companies in India, has unveiled, cricketing legend and current Head Coach of the Indian cricket team, Rahul Dravid as its new brand ambassador.

Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) is an Indian public sector undertaking under the ownership of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Government of India. It operates three refineries in Bina, Kochi and Mumbai.
BPCL is India’s second-largest government-owned downstream oil producer, whose operations are overseen by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
It was ranked 309th on the 2020 Fortune list of the world’s biggest Public sector undertakings in India, and 792nd on Forbes’s 2021 “Global 2000” list.

West Bengal government is taking a Rs 2,500 crore loan from the World Bank and the entire money will be utilised for infrastructure development in the state.
Sources in the state finance department said the focus area of infrastructure development through utilisation of the loan amount will be the improvement of road networks and water transport systems in the state.
“The government wants to emphasise improving exports from the state in the next 10 years.

Adobe co-founder Dr John Warnock passed away on Saturday at the age of 82, Adobe announces today. A cause of death has not been released; he is survived by his wife, graphic designer Marva Warnock, and his three children.

Warnock founded the revolutionary software company Adobe with his partner, the now-late Dr. Charles Geschke, in 1982.

Every year 20 August is celebrated as Sadbhavana Diwas or Communal Harmony Day to commemorate the birth anniversary of the late Rajiv Gandhi, former Prime Minister of India.
He became the youngest-ever prime minister of India at the age of 40. He took over as 6th prime minister after his mother and Prime minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her bodyguard in 1984.
He was assassinated by a Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) suicide bomber in May 1991, during an election rally in Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu.
