India is all set to surpass China to become the world’s most populous country with a population of 1.428 billion, as per a UN report.
The United Nations Population Fund’s State of World Population report showed India’s population to be almost three million more than China’s at mid-year.
India also has a much younger population as compared to China which has an ageing population.

Former Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel received her nation’s highest honour Monday – becoming only the third leader to claim the award.
Merkel received the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit from German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at a ceremony in Berlin.

Wisden Cricketers Almanack has released the list of top-5 cricketers of the year 2022.
It also includes India’s women’s team captain Harmanpreet Kaur. Apart from Kaur, the list also includes the names of Tom Blundell (New Zealand), Ben Foakes (England), Daryl Mitchell (New Zealand) and Matthew Potts (England).
Suryakumar Yadav has been selected as the T20 Cricketer of the Year. Harmanpreet Kaur has become the first woman cricketer from India to make it to this esteemed list.
Apart from this, Ben Stokes of England has been selected as the best cricketer in the world for the year 2022-23 among male players.

Tata Electronics Pvt Ltd on Tuesday announced the appointment of former Intel Foundry Services President Randhir Thakur as its Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director.
Thakur, a global leader and hands-on innovator in the semiconductor industry, has worked with Intel for over 5 years. He brings over 40 years of experience in global manufacturing, research and development, the company said in a statement.
His previous stints include leadership and technical positions at Applied Materials Inc., SanDisk Corp. and also across the semiconductor industry in STEAG Electronic Systems and Micron Technology Inc.

Legendary singer Asha Bhosle will be felicitated with the Lata Deenanath Mangeshkar Award.
The family and the trust instituted the award in memory of Lata Mangeshkar, who died on February 6, 2022, following multiple organ failures.
Bhosle, the younger sister of Lata Mangeshkar, will receive the recognition on April 24, the memorial day of their father and theatre-music veteran Deenanath Mangeshkar.
This award, known as the Lata Deenanath Mangeshkar Puraskar, is given every year to an individual who has made a path-breaking contribution towards the nation, its people and society.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was its first recipient.

World Liver Day is observed annually on April 19 and raises the important and often ignored topic of maintaining liver health. According to a report by the World Health Organization, 3.17% or roughly 268,580 of total deaths in India are caused by liver diseases. World Liver Day is a great initiative to encourage people to educate themselves about liver health.

This day was established to address the growing rate of liver disease-related deaths in the country. The Central government on Tuesday notified the appointment of Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan as Acting Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court with effect from April 20.
Born on April 20, 1961, Justice Sabina demits office on Wednesday evening on attaining the age of 62.

Kerala has become the first state to adopt a water budget in a bid to come up with a solution to water scarcity in certain regions.
The first phase would cover 94-gram panchayats and 15-block panchayats.

The first-ever census of Mangrove Pitta Bird was conducted by the Odisha forest officials in the Bhitarkanika wildlife sanctuary.
In the first census, 179 mangrove pitta birds were sighted.
The habitats of these beautiful birds are confined to mangrove forest areas in Odisha’s Bhitarkanika and Sundarban in West Bengal.

Himachal Pradesh has become the first Indian state to develop a DNA database for unidentified bodies, according to media reports.
The process of creating this database started in April 2022. So far, the database holds records of 150 DNA samples of unidentified bodies.

Karnataka has bagged the national award for the best implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) in the country.
The state has recorded a 47.74% increase in the enrolment of farmers under the scheme, between the Kharif season 2021 and 2022.
The Pradhan Mantri fasal bima yojana launched on 18 February 2016 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is an insurance service for farmers for their yields.

As per the data from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), China will be the top contributor to global growth over the next five years, and its share is set to be double that of the US.
The report by Bloomberg, based on the data of the World Economic Outlook of IMF, reveals that China’s shares are in the global gross domestic product expansion over the next five years, through 2028, and are expected to represent 22.6% of the total world growth.
India is in the second spot, representing 12.9% of the total growth. The US will contribute 11.3%, which is half that of China.

▪ Special Secretary, Ministry of Defence Smt Nivedita Shukla Verma will co-chair the 8th meeting of the f India-Thailand Defence Dialogue with Deputy Permanent Secretary for Defence of Ministry of Defence, Thailand General Nuchit Sribunsong.
▪ During the dialogue, the co-chairs will review the defence cooperation between the two countries and explore new initiatives to further strengthen bilateral engagements.
Both sides will also exchange views on regional and global issues of shared interest.
▪ India & Thailand share a strategic partnership and defence is a key pillar of this cooperation.

▪ The Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) Industry Academia Centre of Excellence (DIA-CoE) has been inaugurated at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Hyderabad.
▪ DRDO Chairman Dr Samir V Kamat inaugurated the facility at the campus of the IIT Hyderabad at Sangareddy in Telangana.
▪ The DIA CoE IITH is the largest centre among all 15 CoEs in the country and the DRDO team will work with IIT-H to identify the target projects in each of these domains and execute to complete in a period of 3-5 years.
