The US has emerged as India’s biggest trading partner in 2022-23 on account of increasing economic ties between the two countries.
According to the provisional data of the commerce ministry, the bilateral trade between India and the US has increased by 7.65 percent to USD 128.55 in 2022-23 as against USD 119.5 billion in 2021-22.
It was USD 80.51 billion in 2020-21.
Exports to the US rose by 2.81 percent to USD 78.31 billion in 2022-23 as against USD 76.18 billion in 2021-22, while imports grew by about 16 percent to USD 50.24 billion, the data showed.

In 2022-23, the UAE with USD 76.16 billion, was the third largest trading partner of India. It was followed by Saudi Arabia (USD 52.72 billion), and Singapore (USD 35.55 billion).

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off Kerala’s first semi-high-speed train, Thiruvananthapuram-Kannur Vande Bharat Express, on April 25 in the state capital, said a senior railway official.

16 rakes of the express train moved into the state from the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai.
The train is expected to cover 510 km in seven hours, said the official quoted above adding since Kerala is densely populated the train cannot take its full speed initially.
It will be India’s 15th Vande Bharat.

The United States and the Philippines are undertaking their largest-ever joint military drills, known as Balikatan, in water across the South China Sea and Taiwan Strait.
Balikatan means ‘shoulder to shoulder’ in Tagalog. The military drills began on April 11 and will end on April 28, 2023.
More than 17,000 soldiers, including about 12,200 American troops, 5,400 members of the Philippines armed forces (AFP) as well as representatives from other countries are taking part in the annual event.

Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao on Friday unveiled a 125-feet tall bronze statue of Dr. B R Ambedkar at the Hussain Sagar Lake on his 132nd birth anniversary.
The statue is the tallest of Ambedkar in the country, made of over 360 tonnes of steel and 100 tonnes of bronze, and cost nearly Rs 145 crore.
It took at least two years to finalise technical and manufacturing measures since the decision was taken by KCR to erect the statue of Ambedkar.
It was designed by renowned sculptors Ram Vanji Sutar and his son Anil Ram Sutar of Ram Sutar Art Creations in Noida, Uttar Pradesh.

State Bank of India (SBI) launched a coffee table book titled “The Banker to Every Indian” and the book celebrates 75 years of Indian independence and 200 years of SBI’s history.
The book aims to provide a detailed account of the history of SBI since India attained independence.

Net direct tax collections rose by 18 percent to Rs 16.61 lakh crore in the 2022-23 fiscal, exceeding the revised estimates (RE).
The gross collection of direct taxes (before adjusting for refunds) for 2022-23 stands at Rs 19.68 lakh crore, a growth of 20.33 percent over the gross collection of Rs 16.36 lakh crore in FY2021-22, the finance ministry said.
The Budget Estimates (BE) for direct tax revenue in the Union Budget for 2022-23 were fixed at Rs 14.20 lakh crore, and the Revised Estimates (RE) were pegged higher at Rs 16.50 lakh crore.
The net direct tax collections, which include taxes from individuals and corporations, have exceeded the BE by 16.97 percent and RE by 0.69 percent.

The European Space Agency has sent a spacecraft to explore Jupiter and three of its largest and most intriguing moons.
The Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer mission, or Juice, launched Friday at 8:14 a.m. ET aboard an Ariane 5 rocket from Europe’s spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana.
The spacecraft separated from the Ariane 5 rocket 28 minutes after launch, and ESA received a signal from Juice about an hour after liftoff, confirming that Earth-based mission control can “talk” to the vehicle.
Over the course of the next 17 days, Juice will deploy its solar arrays, antennas and other instruments, followed by three months of testing and preparing the instruments.
