India’s retail inflation slid below the 6% mark for the first time in 2023 — and only the third time in the last 15 months — to touch 5.66% in March 2023. The drop was aided by base effects, as the same month had recorded an almost 7% price rise last year.
March’s inflation level was last witnessed in December 2021, following which prices rose at a pace faster than the Central Bank’s upper tolerance threshold of 6% for ten months in a row.
Despite the moderation in the last month of the fiscal year, Indian consumers faced an average inflation of 6.66% through 2022-23. This is higher than the 6.5% average price rise projected by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in February.

Veteran Liberation Warfighter and legendary public health activist Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury passed away in Dhaka last night. He was 81. Dr Zafrullah was admitted to Gonoshasthaya Nagar Hospital last week. He was on life support since Monday. Dr Zafrullah was suffering from kidney-related ailments and other old-age-related problems.

Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury was a vascular surgeon and a pioneer in public health. He set up the Gonoshasthaya Kendra in 1972 to provide affordable and quality treatment to underprivileged people. It has expanded into a network of seven hospitals and 50 sub-centers providing affordable healthcare services to the people of Bangladesh.

Kolkata Metro has achieved a major milestone after its rake run beneath the river on Wednesday. This is for the first time in the history of the country that the metro rake has completed its journey under the river.

India’s wrestler, Antim Pangal won the silver medal in the 53 kg category at the 2023 Asian Wrestling Championships held in Astana, Kazakhstan.

The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC), has named India’s first semi-high-speed regional rail service as ‘RAPIDX’, which will run on the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridors.
RAPIDX is being implemented by NCRTC to connect key urban nodes across the National Capital Region (NCR).
It is a joint venture company of the Union government and Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh.
The NCRTC will commission the entire Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor by 2025.

World Chagas Disease Day celebrated annually on April 14, calls attention to the Chagas disease, a parasitic disease affecting more than six million people worldwide. As many as 300 babies are born with Chagas disease every year.

It was the year 1909 when a physician, Carlos Chagas, discovered the Chagas disease in a two-year-old girl called Berenice. From thereon began the journey toward discovering symptoms of the disease, its effects, and how it can be cured. These efforts greatly reduced the spread of the disease. But even though the risk of transmission has decreased, we have a long way to go before the disease is completely eradicated from the world.

Maharashtra government declared 28 May, the birth anniversary of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, as ‘Swatantraveer Gaurav Diwas’.
