The State Bank of India (SBI) is planning to launch new variants of the current account (with balances of ₹50,000 and ₹50 lahks) and the “Parivar” (family) savings account in FY24 to minimize the gap between deposit growth and credit growth.
The new plans come in the wake of deposit growth lagging credit growth over the last few quarters.
Domestic deposits of India’s largest bank grew 8.86 percent year-on-year (y-o-y) by the end of 2022, while domestic advances were up 16.91 percent y-o-y.
SBI expects that its domestic deposits and domestic advances will grow about 12 percent and 16 percent y-o-y, respectively, in FY24.

Teenaged Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh stunned former world rapid champion Nodirbek Abdusattorov of Uzbekistan in the final to win the World Chess Armageddon Asia & Oceania event.
Gukesh emerged winner in a topsy-turvy summit clash late on Sunday.
The first game of the ‘new’ match was a draw after a perpetual check from Gukesh. He won the next game to emerge champion.
Both Gukesh and Abdusattorov have earned a spot at Armageddon’s Grand Finale in September.

As per the information by Union Minister Jitendra Singh, in India, the Government has set the target that nearly 9% share of electricity is likely to be contributed from nuclear sources by 2047.
The rising contribution of nuclear power in India’s energy sector will help the country to achieve the commitment of the net zero targets by 2070.
The other target laid down by the Department of Atomic Energy is achieving 20 gigawatts (GW) capacity of nuclear power generation by 2030. This will make India the third-largest producer of atomic energy in the world after the US and France.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has granted the national party status to Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
AAP was recognized as a state party in the NCT of Delhi.
The Trinamool Congress (TMC), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), and Communist Party of India (CPI), however, lost their national party status. Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) has received recognition as a state party in Nagaland.

The Forbes Billionaire List 2023 reveals that 2,640 billionaires of the world are listed in the ranking hail from 77 countries or territories.
According to Forbes, the United States has topped the list for having the highest number of the billionaire.
The US has 735 billionaires in the ranking, similar to 2022. China stood second in terms of the number of billionaires, at 495, compared to 539 in 2022.
India is in the third spot in the rankings with 169 billionaires.
Germany is in 4th place with 126 billionaires, while Russia with 105 billionaires has the 5th highest number of billionaires.

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) signed a memorandum of understanding with the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-Bombay) on Monday, to develop a touchless biometric capture system for easier use, anytime and anywhere.

Under the MoU, UIDAI and IIT Bombay will carry out joint research to build a mobile capture system for fingerprints along with a liveness model integrated with the capture system.

Once developed and operational, the touchless biometric capture system will allow fingerprint authentication from home, akin to face authentication. The new system is expected to capture multiple fingerprints at one go and improve the authentication success rate.

Once in place, it will be an addition to the existing facilities available in the Aadhaar ecosystem, said a statement from PIB.

An international exercise named Iniochos-2023 is going to take place in Greece from 18 April in which the world’s deadliest fighter jets will be included.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) said on Tuesday that it expects India’s economy to grow 5.9% in the current fiscal year though it warned that turmoil in the financial system will hurt global growth.
In its World Economic Outlook, the IMF forecast global real GDP growth at 2.8% for 2023 and 3% for 2024, marking a sharp slowdown from 3.4% growth in 2022 due to tighter monetary policies.
The IMF predicted that the Indian economy would grow 5.9% in the 2023-24 financial year, down 0.2% from its January estimate, and much lower than the Indian central bank’s prediction for 6.5% growth during this period.

Aim: To suggest the ratio in which tax is to be divided between the Centre and states for five years, beginning April 1, 2026.

In FY23, Gujarat had the highest utilization-to-released fund ratio of MPLADS funds.
While ₹66 crores were allocated to the state, it had utilized ₹95.77 crores, 145.11 percent. This is according to the data that the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation presented in the parliament on March 27, 2023.

Rao Inderjit Singh, Minister of State (Independent Charge) was answering a question posed by CPI(M) MP John Brittas, in the Rajya Sabha. The other major states with the highest utilization-to-released fund ratio include Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, West Bengal, and Tamil Nadu.
After a hiatus, FY23 was a financial year that saw the Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) implemented in the full wing. The scheme was paused during the beginning of the pandemic and was resumed only in November 2021.
MPLADS is a central government scheme under which MPs can recommend development programs of expenditure of ₹5 crores every year in their constituencies.
Both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs can recommend projects here. The funds for the projects get transferred to the respective local authorities here.
At the same time, States like Telangana and Uttarakhand have spent just 52.8 percent and 63.6 percent of the total funds that they received in FY23.

It was used to target 8 central government entities of India, including the IT Department and central paramilitary forces.

National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO), a specialized intelligence agency under the National Security Advisor, wrote to the affected agencies informing them of the attack.

Playing in his 165th match of the cash-rich league, the left-handed Australian batter scored 65 runs from 55 balls, and during his innings, which did nothing good to Delhi’s chances as they suffered their third back-to-back defeat in IPL 2023, Warner joined the elite list of batters who have managed to score 6,000 or more runs in IPL history.

Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi has granted assent to the bill passed by the Tamil Nadu Assembly to ban online gambling and regulate it, an official said on Monday.
The Bill was first passed by the Tamil Nadu assembly in October 2022 but the Governor returned the bill in March.
A senior official of the Raj Bhavan had then said that the bill was returned as the state legislature had no ‘legislative competence’ to frame the bill.
The Tamil Nadu legislative assembly then re-adopted the bill once again on March 23, 2023, and sent it to the Governor for assent. The Governor has now given assent to the bill banning online gambling and regulating it.
