UPSC CDS – II Recruitment 2024 Eligibility Criteria
Education Qualification
- For admission to the Indian Military Academy (I.M.A.) and Officers’ Training Academy, Chennai, candidates must possess a Degree from a recognized University or its equivalent.
- For entry into the Indian Naval Academy, candidates should have a Degree in Engineering from a recognized University/Institution.
- For admission to the Air Force Academy, candidates must hold a Degree from a recognized University, with Physics and Mathematics at the 10+2 level, or a Bachelor of Engineering degree.
Candidates opting for the Army/Navy/Air Force as their first choice must submit proof of Graduation or provisional certificates during the SSB Interview.
Candidates in their final year/semester of the Degree course can also apply provided they do not have any present backlog up to the last semester/year for which results have been declared at the time of application submission. Proof of passing the degree examination must be submitted at the commencement of the course.
Age Limit
- For admission to the Indian Military Academy (IMA), unmarried male candidates born between July 2, 2001, and July 1, 2006, are eligible.
- For entry into the Indian Naval Academy, unmarried male candidates born between July 2, 2001, and July 1, 2006, are eligible.
- For admission to the Air Force Academy, candidates must be aged between 20 to 24 years as of July 1, 2025, i.e., born between July 2, 2001, and July 1, 2005. However, candidates holding a valid and current Commercial Pilot License issued by DGCA (India) can apply up to the age of 26 years, i.e., born between July 2, 1999, and July 1, 2005.
Nationality
A candidate must be unmarried and must fulfill one of the following criteria:
(i) Citizen of India
(ii) Subject of Nepal
(iii) a Person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, and East African Countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, and Ethiopia or Vietnam to permanently settle in India.
Candidates belonging to categories (ii) and (iii) above must possess a certificate of eligibility issued by the Government of India, except for Gorkha subjects of Nepal, who do not require such a certificate.
Candidates requiring a certificate of eligibility may be provisionally admitted to the examination pending receipt of the necessary certificate from the Government before the declaration of the result by UPSC.
Marital Status
- For the Indian Military Academy (IMA) and Indian Naval Academy (INA), only unmarried males are eligible to apply for the CDS Exam.
- For the Indian Air Force Academy (AFA), both married and unmarried males can apply. However, marriage during the training period is not permitted.
- For the Officer Training Academy (OTA), both unmarried males and females can apply for the CDS Exam.
Physical Standards
Candidates must meet the following physical standards for admission to the Combined Defence Services Examination (II), 2024:
- The minimum acceptable height for male candidates is 157 cm.
- For Navy candidates: 157 cm
- For Air Force candidates: 162.5 cm
- For female candidates: 152 cm
- Gorkhas and candidates from the Hills of the North Eastern region of India, Garhwal, and Kumaon: 152 cm
- Tribals from the Ladakh Region, Andaman & Nicobar, Lakshadweep, Minicoy Islands, and Extra talented sports candidates: 155 cm
- Body Mass Index (BMI) should be below 25.
- The ratio of waist and hip should be below 0.9 for males and 0.8 for females.
- Waist circumference should be less than 90 cm for males and 80 cm for females.
UPSC CDS – II Recruitment 2024 Selection Process
The recruitment procedure for AFA (Air Force Academy), IMA (Indian Military Academy), INA (Indian Naval Academy), and Officers Training Academy (OTA) positions would normally contain the following stages:
- Written Exam: Candidates must pass the written examination that is part of the Combined Defence Services (CDS) Examination.
- SSB Interview/Personality Test: Shortlisted applicants from the written exam are interviewed by the Services Selection Board (SSB), which involves a series of tests designed to examine the candidate’s personality, intelligence, and readiness for a military career.
- Document Verification: Candidates who pass the SSB interview must undertake document verification to ensure that all submitted documents are genuine and match the eligibility requirements.
- Finally, candidates must undergo a medical examination to assess their physical and medical fitness.

- Military Service Pay (MSP) for officers from Lieutenant to Brigadier is fixed at Rs 15,500 per month.
- Officer Cadets undergoing training in service academies like the Indian Military Academy (IMA) and Officers Training Academy (OTA) receive a fixed stipend of Rs 56,100 per month.
- Upon successful commissioning, the pay in the Pay matrix of the Officer commissioned shall be fixed in the first Cell of Level 10.
- The training period at service academies is not treated as commissioned service.
- Arrears on account of admissible allowances for the training period shall be paid to cadets.
