About Mumbai Port Trust
Mumbai Port Trust, also known as the Bombay Port Trust, occupies a strategic location midway along the West coast of India, nestled within the natural deep-water harbor of Mumbai (formerly Bombay) in Maharashtra. Spanning an impressive 400 square kilometers (150 sq mi), the harbor is sheltered by the Konkan mainland to its east and north, while the island city of Mumbai guards its western flank. Opening southward to the Arabian Sea, it serves as a vital gateway for maritime trade.
Administered by the Mumbai Port Trust (formerly the Bombay Port Trust), an autonomous corporation wholly owned by the Government of India, this port primarily handles bulk cargo operations. Container traffic, on the other hand, is largely directed to the Nhava Sheva port situated across the harbor.
