NASA has successfully run a ‘kick’ test contracting orbit of Asteroid Dimorphos.
In this post, you’ll revise the difference between Asteroids, Meteoroids, Meteors, Comet, and Meteorites.
Asteroids
– formed from the debris of the solar system
– MOST found in the asteroid belt (not restricted to)
– Either revolve around the sun or another celestial body
– smaller than a planet, larger than meteoroids
Meteoroids
– Small broken pieces of asteroids or comets
– break away because of collision or action of other forces
Meteors
– A meteoroid enters earth to vaporize and form a streak of light in the sky aka meteor
– aka shooting stars
– Made of rocks
Comets
– Made of ice & dust NOT rocks
– Near the sun, the ice & dust vaporize giving it a tail (like a meteor)
– It can be seen even in far-off space (unlike meteors which are in Earth’s atmosphere when seen)
Meteorites
– The meteors that don’t burn completely land on earth
– When on Earth, they are called meteorites
