Kerala’s Alappuzha district registered the death of a 15-year-old boy on Thursday suffering from primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM).
The condition occurs after an infection caused by Naegleria fowleri, also known as ‘brain-eating amoeba.’
This is a rare infection that affects our central nervous system and has a high rate of fatality.

Kerala Health Minister Veena George assured the people that the PAM doesn’t spread from one person to another. The samples of the patient have been transferred to the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research and will undergo a detailed examination.

The International Tennis Federation (ITF) awarded the highest honour, ‘ Philippe Chatrier Award 2023’, to Belgian tennis player Justine Henin.
She won seven Grand Slam singles titles, an Olympic gold medal, and the Fed Cup (Billie Jean King Cup) in 2001.
The award was named after the former ITF president and was introduced in 1996.
This award recognizes people who have made significant contributions to the sport on and off the court.

The Department of School Education and Literacy (DoSE&L), Ministry of Education today released the Performance Grading Index for Districts (PGI-D) combined report for 2020-21 & 2021-22 which assesses the performance of the school education system at the District level by creating an index for comprehensive analysis.
The Indian Education System is one of the largest in the world with about 14.9 lakh schools, 95 lakh teachers, and nearly 26.5 crore students from varied socio-economic backgrounds.
DoSE&L devised Performance Grading Index (PGI) for States and released a report for the reference years 2017-18 to 2020-21.
Based on the success of State PGI, 83-indicator-based PGI for District (PGI-D) has been designed to grade the performance of all districts in school education.
The data is filled in by districts through an online portal.
The PGI-D is expected to help the state education departments to identify gaps at the district level and improve their performance in a decentralized manner.

The DGFT (Directorate General of Foreign Trade) has issued a notification declaring that the import of potatoes from Bhutan will continue without the need for an import license until June 30, 2024. Young Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh finished fifth while his illustrious compatriot Viswanathan Anand could only manage a tied seventh place in the third leg of the 2023 SuperUnited Rapid and Blitz chess tournament.
Gukesh, who had a moderate performance on day 1 of the Blitz segment, bounced back well on the second day to pick up 6.5 points which included wins over Anand and top players like Fabiano Caruana (USA) and Jan-Krzysztof Duda (Poland).
Gukesh, who beat Anand for the first time in tournament play in the Rapid segment, got the better of the five-time world champion in 34 moves in the blitz.

INS Kavaratti, indigenously designed & built ASW Corvette, arrived at Batam, Indonesia to participate in the 4th edition of India-Indonesia Bilateral exercise Samudra Shakti-23 from 26 June- 7 July 2023.
