Commonwealth Games silver medallist Kerala Boy Sreeshankar achieved his best jump of the day in his third attempt.
His 8.09m effort was below his season’s best of 8.18m, which he recorded while winning gold in an event in Greece last month. The 24-year-old has a personal best of 8.36m that came last year.
That made Sreeshankar only the third Indian, after discus thrower Vikas Gowda and javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, and the first Indian long jumper to win a medal in the Diamond League, the world’s top athletics series which was started by the world body IAAF (now renamed as World Athletics) in 2010.
Sreeshankar, the Commonwealth Games silver medallist who has a personal best of 8.36m (2022), started with 7.79 and moved to the second spot with 8.09m – his best jump in the event – in the third round. The 24-year-old fouled his fourth and sixth jumps and did a 7.99 in his fifth.

The Kerala government has launched a new scheme to reward for reporting illegal waste dumping on roads.
This scheme is a part of the ‘Malinya Muktham Nava Keralam’ campaign to make the state garbage-free.
Under this scheme, citizens would report the littering/dumping (solid and liquid waste) in public spaces, private property and water bodies.
The person who informs authorities of such violations will be given Rs 2,500 (maximum) or 25% of the fine imposed.

The state government has decided to gift GI-tagged Gulabi Meenakari handicrafts to the visiting delegates from G20 nations.

The Punjab government recently has set a target of five lakh acres to be sown under the direct seeded rice (DSR) method of paddy cultivation this Kharif season.
The DSR target for this season is 2.5 times more than the previous season (2.12 lakh acres). The state government has identified varieties suitable for different agro-climatic zones of the state and made arrangements for their availability to the farmers.
To encourage farmers to adopt the DSR method, the government has provided subsidies on seed drills, herbicides and weedicides.
The state government has engaged experts from Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) and Agriculture Department to provide technical guidance and monitoring to the farmers.

Manchester City have been named as Europe’s most valuable football club, ousting Real Madrid, in a report published on Thursday, before this weekend’s Champions League final.
The Football Benchmark report ranks Europe’s 32 most prominent clubs based on a series of criteria including assessments of their financial statements, squad value and the size of their broadcast market.

Uruguay on Monday prepared to welcome home their latest, and long-awaited, world champions, as the under-20 team headed home after winning their age-group World Cup in Argentina.

Luciano Rodriguez scored the winner in the 86th minute as Uruguay beat Italy 1-0 in the Diego Maradona stadium in La Plata, some 60 kilometres from Buenos Aires, on Sunday night.

It was Uruguay’s third appearance in the under-20 final after losing in 1997 to Argentina and on penalties in 2013 to France.
